WHAT THIS IS
------------
Uniden BC-WF1 Wi-Fi dongle firmware 7.26. An earlier BC-WF1 dongle firmware
posted on the BCD536HP Wi-Fi Test page on 26 September 2014 and replaced there
by 7.28 on 21 October 2014. No release notes were published.
The BC-WF1 is the USB Wi-Fi dongle that plugs into the rear USB jack of the
BCD536HP. Menu > Wi-Fi Setup > Show Wi-Fi Information shows its firmware
version. Uniden's firmware page says: "FOLLOW THESE STEPS IF YOUR WI-FI DONGLE
IS v5.01 or v0.00" and "START HERE IF YOUR WI-FI MODULE IS V4.X OR ALREADY
7.X" (that is, dongles on 4.x or 7.x can be updated by Sentinel through the
scanner instead).
APPLIES TO
----------
The Uniden BC-WF1 Wi-Fi dongle supplied with the BCD536HP. This is not scanner
firmware: never copy it to the scanner's firmware folder as a main-firmware
file. The BCD436HP has no Wi-Fi dongle.
BEFORE STARTING
---------------
- A Windows PC with a free USB port; the dongle plugs straight into the PC.
- The STM Virtual COM Port driver (STM_VCP.zip, VCP_V1.3.1_Setup.exe or
VCP_V1.3.1_Setup_x64.exe) installed first.
- The BC-WF1 Firmware Updater installed (0.00.05 in the Wi-Fi-Updater package,
or the older 0.00.03).
- Simplest route: download the Wi-Fi-Updater package, which holds the driver,
the updater and firmware 7.28 together.

INSTALLATION
------------
From Uniden's BCD536HP firmware page (February 2015 revision):
1. Unzip the STM_VCP driver and run VCP_V1.3.1_Setup.exe (32-bit Windows) or
VCP_V1.3.1_Setup_x64.exe (64-bit).
2. Plug the Wi-Fi dongle directly into a USB port on the PC and let the driver
install (Windows plays the device-connect tone).
3. Install the BC-WF1 Firmware Updater, then run it from Uniden > BCDx36HP >
BC_Wifi_Updater. It may need Run as administrator (right-click, or hold
Ctrl+Shift while opening).
4. When prompted, point the updater at BC-WF1_V7_26.bin (unzipped from this
download), select the COM port assigned to the dongle, and press OK (older
updater: Start updating).
5. Expect a pause of about 45 seconds at the start, during which the program
may look unresponsive; Windows plays the disconnect/connect tone and the
update proceeds.
6. Put the dongle back in the scanner's rear USB jack. Uniden's page then has
the scanner firmware updated with Sentinel (UPDATE > Update Firmware).
VERIFYING
---------
On the BCD536HP, go to Menu > Wi-Fi Setup > Show Wi-Fi Information. The dongle
firmware version is shown there and should read 7.26.
IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG
-----------------------
- Uniden's Wi-Fi Test page: "If an error message appears unplug, then replug
in the dongle and repeat" the updater step.
- If the COM port does not appear, reinstall the STM driver matching the
Windows bitness.
- Windows may warn about unsigned drivers or unsafe programs; Uniden's page
states the software was checked and the warnings can be bypassed.
- A dongle that still reports 5.01 or 0.00 cannot be fixed through the
scanner; it must be reflashed on the PC as above.
DOWNGRADING
-----------
The updater writes whichever .bin it is given; no version check is documented.
There is no known reason to go below 7.28.
