GRE PSR-800 EZ Scan Digital PC application 1.08
Recommended version Verified — manufacturer file
Download zip (39.4 MB) Manufacturer's page ↗
GRE's PC application for the PSR-800, version 1.08 (1.8.0.286): programming, card preparation and, while GRE's servers existed, Library and CPU/DSP firmware updates. PC application 1.08 build 286 is the version GRE released with CPU firmware U1.8 on 15 January 2013, the release that made P25 Phase II official (requires DSP U1.3 or later).
Read before installing. GRE's update servers are gone: the program still installs and programs the radio, but its firmware and Library update checks find nothing. Not for a Whistler-upgraded (Boot 2.0) PSR-800, which needs WS1080 EZ-Scan.

GRE PSR-800 EZ Scan Digital PC application 1.08
===============================================
WHAT THIS IS
------------
GRE's Windows PC application for the PSR-800, "GRECOM PSR-800 EZ Scan Digital
Handheld Trunking Scanner Programming System" (EZScanDG.exe), version 1.08
(file version 1.8.0.286), in GRE's own zip and NSIS installer.
PC application 1.08 build 286 is the version GRE released with CPU firmware
U1.8 on 15 January 2013, the release that made P25 Phase II official (requires
DSP U1.3 or later). The installer's files are dated 2013-01-15; the program is
file version 1.8.0.286. It is the last GRE installer found; a 1.09 mentioned
by owners in 2015 was not found.
What still works in 2026: installing, programming the radio, saving and
loading the configuration, and preparing the microSD card from the Library
snapshot the installer carries. What no longer works: the Update menu's checks
for software, CPU firmware, DSP firmware and Library updates. They used GRE's
update server (scanner-update.com); with GRE gone, the checks find nothing,
and no manufacturer distributes PSR-800 firmware or Library updates any more.
The installer bundles a RadioReference Library snapshot (RRDB and location
database files) exactly as GRE shipped it; this archive does not update or
separate it.
APPLIES TO
----------
GRE PSR-800 (GRECOM EZ Scan-SD Digital). Hardware ID of the USB serial
interface: USB\VID_0C97&PID_0008&MI_01 ("GRECOM PSR-800 Serial Device").
Must NOT be used with:
- a PSR-800 that has been through the Whistler Official Upgrade (boot 2.0): it
is a WS1080 in software terms and needs the WS1080 driver and WS1080
EZ-Scan.
- a PSR-800 running unofficial WS1080-derived firmware (CPU 3.x, DSP 3.1-4.6).
- the RadioShack PRO-18 or PRO-668, which use RadioShack's iScan software.
Its CPU update function must never be pointed at firmware for another model:
GREFwTool's notes warn the bootloader then erases the radio's application
firmware.
BEFORE STARTING
---------------
- A Windows PC. On Windows 10/11 the PSR-800 driver is unsigned; the
RadioReference wiki page "Windows 10 installation of GRE PSR-800 Software
and Driver" describes installing it with driver signature enforcement
disabled.
- The PSR-800's mini-USB data cable. The USB jack is also the power and
charging input.
- Save the scanner's configuration to the PC before changing anything, and
copy the whole microSD card.
- GRE's manual: power the radio off before connecting or disconnecting
external power, and eject the card drive before unplugging, or the microSD
card can corrupt.

INSTALLATION
------------
1. Unzip and run the installer (NSIS setup wizard; the individual screens
were not recorded). It installs the program, the help file, the user
guides (English and, in 1.08, French), the driver INF (GRECOM_PSR-800.inf)
and a starter configuration under Documents\EZ Scan Digital.
2. Install the driver for the PSR-800's serial interface if Windows does not:
Device Manager > update driver > the INF above, with signature enforcement
disabled on Windows 10/11 if required.
3. With the scanner powered OFF, connect the USB cable. The microSD card
mounts as a drive; close any autorun window.
4. Start EZ Scan Digital, read the configuration from the card or scanner,
edit, and write it back.
Firmware updates (historical): with the scanner off and connected, Update >
Check for CPU Firmware Update > Check for Updates > Update My Scanner, wait
several minutes for "Done", then the same for Check for DSP Firmware Update.
These now find nothing because GRE's server is gone.
VERIFYING
---------
The program's About box shows its version. On the radio, GRE's Phase II beta
notes say the version screen is "accessed by pressing menu when the welcome
message is displayed after a power up", where the "uP Appl Ver" line shows the
CPU version. CPU U1.8 or later with DSP U1.3 or later is GRE's Phase II
firmware.
IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG
-----------------------
- Failed CPU update: force CPU update mode by holding MENU while plugging in
the USB cable, then retry (documented for the WS1080 and matching GRE's
application from 1.8 onward). With GRE's server gone, the retry itself
cannot fetch firmware; see the GRE PSR-800 CPU firmware U2.0 and GREFwTool
entries for the only surviving route.
- Error 03-xx at power-on is a card error, 05-xx a configuration-file error:
rebuild the card from the PC application. Some microSD brands are reported
to fail with Error 03-01.
- "Update Failed" on the 2015 CPU 2.0 update was cured for owners by running
the application as administrator.
- Date lockout (unofficial firmware only): a PSR-800 running unofficial
WS1080-derived firmware (CPU 3.1 with DSP 4.6) must not have its clock set
past 2017-05-31, including through this program's option to set the clock to
computer time; a late-June DSP 3.1 build triggers after 2017-07-01 and
leaves the unit at "Waiting for USB". Every present-day date is past both,
and the PSR-800 loses its clock when the batteries are out for more than a
few minutes. Do not set the clock on such a unit. GRE's own firmware is not
reported to carry the lockout.
DOWNGRADING
-----------
GRE's application offers no firmware downgrade path: once U1.8 is installed
through it, there is no official way back. The community GREFwTool (in this
archive) can downgrade, outside any manufacturer support.
For the application itself, installing the older 1.03 over 1.08 is not
blocked, but 1.03 predates Set Location and Phase II and gains nothing.
